Years before becoming House speaker, Republican Rep. Mike Johnson of Louisiana played a leading role aiding Donald Trump’s efforts to overturn the 2020 election. That history will be on display Friday, with Johnson set to deliver remarks alongside the former president about “election integrity” – a phrase Trump often uses to describe the lie that the 2020 election was rigged and unfounded concerns about future mass voter fraud. Johnson carved out an influential role after the 2020 election, helping Trump’s attempts to subvert the will of the people and overturn the legitimate results. He later recruited a majority of House Republicans to endorse a Trump-backed lawsuit seeking to invalidate the results from four key states that Trump lost: Pennsylvania, Georgia, Michigan and Wisconsin. (In truth, as the Supreme Court later affirmed, judges have the power to review state election laws.)

CNN —A pro-Trump lawyer who tried to overturn the 2020 election was arrested Monday after a court hearing about her recent leak of internal emails belonging to Dominion Voting Systems. In the last 24 hours, Leaf has posted more than 2,000 internal Dominion documents on his social media account. The marshals declined to say whether they arrested her, and she didn’t answer messages seeking comment after the hearing. During the at-times testy hearing Monday, Magistrate Judge Moxila Upadhyaya peppered Lambert with sharp questions about the disputed Dominion materials. Dominion wants Lambert removed from the case and suggested in court Monday that she might have committed a crime by disseminating the files to Leaf.

The Senate voted 31-22 to pass Senate Bill 189, sending it on to the House for more debate. Also Tuesday, Burns' committee approved a state constitutional amendment that says only U.S. citizens can vote in Georgia elections. Supporters, including Raffensperger, claim the measure is needed to make sure no one ever changes the current Georgia law that bars noncitizens from voting. Some lawmakers hope new optical scanners can be purchased and used to count ballots without QR codes this year. All Democrats, even one who voted to ban QR codes in committee, voted against the Senate bill Tuesday.

In fact, "data centers are taking a disproportionate amount of incremental capacity being added by electrical equipment manufacturers." Much of the energy data centers consume is used to train AI models as well as to run them. Natural resources, power supply, funding — the necessities that allow for the existence of the data centers — aren't exactly infinite. The company's business took off last year as data centers began to need more electrical equipment capacity and generated more heat. ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) — Wind energy developer Orsted is writing off $4 billion, due largely to the cancellation of two large offshore wind projects in New Jersey whose financial challenges mirror those facing the nascent industry. Some projects already have been canceled, and many offshore wind developers are seeking better terms from governments with whom they have already contracted. Despite the challenges, some wind projects are moving forward. Orsted said it is proceeding with its Revolution Wind project in Connecticut and Rhode Island. And New Jersey still has several other offshore wind projects in various stages of development, with four new proposals submitted in August alone.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (AP) — A power company's plans for an enormous offshore wind farm off Virginia's coast gained key federal approval Tuesday after the Biden Administration evaluated the project's potential impact on the environment. The utility will still need federal approval of its construction and operation plans before more pilings rise above the Atlantic Ocean. Dominion said its project will be the largest offshore wind farm under development in the United States. The administration said it wants to build 30 gigawatts of offshore wind energy by 2030 — enough to power more than 10 million homes. The Southern Environmental Law Center cited the importance of offshore wind for cutting carbon pollution, which fuels climate change.

CNN —Attorneys representing conspiracy theorist Mike Lindell and his company MyPillow in a defamation lawsuit brought by Dominion Voting Systems asked to withdraw from the case on Thursday after Lindell allegedly racked up millions in unpaid legal fees. In a court filing, Minnesota-based Parker Daniels Kibort said both Lindell and MyPillow have not paid the firm for its work on the case and won’t be able to pay future fees and costs. But Lindell was adamant that he would not settle with Dominion or Smartmatic, another election technology company suing him for defamation. The court must grant the attorneys’ motion to withdraw before they can formally drop Lindell and MyPillow as clients. Attorneys for Dominion did not have a position regarding the motion when it was filed, the court filing shows.

Mr. Murdoch sued Crikey last August over an opinion column with the headline: “Trump is a confirmed unhinged traitor. And Murdoch is his unindicted co-conspirator.” The column did not specify whether it was referring to Mr. Murdoch or his father, Rupert Murdoch. The settlement Fox News may pay to Smartmatic could be around $1 billion, experts say. Disney's $177 million settlement for the infamous "pink slime" lawsuit in 2017 dropped to second place. Experts told Insider that the $787.5 million settlement is a strong benchmark for Smartmatic — and that Smartmatic will likely get more. New York CNN —Fox Corp. posted a loss in the most recent quarter after it paid a $787.5 million settlement to Dominion Voting Systems. The earnings statement didn’t mention Dominion Voting Systems, although it does refer to charges related to legal settlement costs at Fox News Media. Since its settlement with Dominion, Fox has fired its most popular anchor, Tucker Carlson. The Dominion settlement was reached on April 18. The better than expected earnings helped lift shares of Fox (FOX) rose in premarket trading following the report.
Tucker Carlson once sent a text saying he wanted a group of white men to kill an "Antifa kid." Carlson texted a producer about the moment he felt blood lust seeing a "kid" being hurt. In the text — sent on January 7, 2021, one day after the Capitol riot — Carlson said that he found himself "rooting for the mob against the man, hoping they'd hit him harder, kill him." The text message was included — but redacted — as evidence in Dominion Voting Systems' defamation lawsuit against Fox News. The Times obtained the redacted Carlson text message from several unnamed sources who were granted anonymity to share the message.

While the figure matches the one on social media, the filing was for Dominion Energy Inc, not Dominion Voting Systems. “Dominion Energy and Dominion Voting Systems are not related,” Ryan Frazier, manager of executive communications at Dominion Energy, told Reuters via email, adding that BlackRock is a shareholder in Dominion Energy common stock. “Blackrock does not own any shares of Dominion Voting Systems,” Isabela Velasco, a spokesperson for Dominion Voting Systems, told Reuters via email, adding that Staple Street Capital has a controlling stake in the voting systems company (here).
